Begins at Birth
Linda Hamilton's path into birth work began in the mid-1980s after the unmedicated birth of her first child. Deeply moved by the experience and recognizing the importance of support during the transition to motherhood, she established a support group for new mothers. It was through the friendships and connections formed within this community that she first began accompanying women through pregnancy, labor, and birth—an experience that ignited a lifelong passion for birth work, advocacy, and education.
In 2001, she began pursuing formal training. Her education extended far beyond traditional coursework, providing opportunities to learn from homebirth midwives, birth attendants, death doulas, childbirth educators, and practitioners serving families in different areas of the U.S and in remote regions of Costa Rica.
This diverse and unconventional education gave Linda a broad and deeply human understanding of birth, allowing her to witness childbirth across a wide range of cultural, medical, and community settings. These experiences profoundly enriched her perspective and strengthened her commitment to supporting mothers, babies, and families with compassion, respect, and evidence-informed care.
Throughout her career, Linda has been a passionate advocate for women's rights to make informed decisions about their pregnancies, births, and postpartum experiences. She believes that every mother deserves the freedom to choose the birth setting and birth attendants that best align with her values, needs, and circumstances.
Guided by a belief that birth is a fundamental human right deserving of protection and respect, Linda founded and directed Birth Without Boundaries, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (2004-2013) focused on education, advocacy, and the advancement of mother-centered maternity care. Through the organization, she supported homebirth midwives facing legal challenges, advocated for mothers and babies within hospital systems, recognizing that meaningful change sometimes requires challenging established systems. In one instance, in the early 2000’s, advocacy efforts led to the arrest of Linda and other fellow activists during a public action event focused on maternal and infant rights. The event became a catalyst for constructive engagement with hospital leadership, contributing to substantial policy improvements and a multimillion-dollar renovation of maternity facilities designed to better support the health, well-being, and bonding needs of mothers and babies.
Through Birth Without Boundaries, she helped advance breastfeeding protections through public education and legislative efforts in Pennsylvania, and in 2007, organized one of the largest breastfeeding awareness events in the United States in response to a highly publicized incident involving the harassment of a breastfeeding mother at a national restaurant chain. The effort brought national attention to the rights of breastfeeding families and helped facilitate constructive dialogue with corporate leadership. As a result, the restaurant chain publicly affirmed its support for a mother's right to breastfeed wherever she is legally permitted and comfortable. The educational and staff-training protocols created and provided by BWB, developed through the resolution process, served as a model for other businesses and organizations seeking to better support breastfeeding families and comply with state breastfeeding protection laws.
Linda's commitment to strengthening birth culture also extended internationally, including facilitating a midwifery conference in Costa Rica attended by birth professionals from more than 20 countries. The gathering fostered collaboration, cross-cultural learning, and knowledge exchange among those dedicated to serving mothers and babies worldwide. One of the conference's most meaningful outcomes occurred when a previously unseen group of indigenous midwives chose, for the first time, to publicly identify themselves and share concerns about preserving their ancestral birth traditions. Seeking assurance that their practices could continue without interference, they requested guidance regarding their legal standing. Through a review and clarification of Costa Rican constitutional protections, it was confirmed that their traditional midwifery practices were legally protected, allowing them to emerge from obscurity with greater confidence in their right to preserve and pass on their cultural heritage.
At the heart of Linda's work is a profound belief that birth is one of the most important human experiences deserving of protection, respect, and support. She recognizes that the earliest stages of life—from conception through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period—have lasting impacts on neurological development, emotional well-being, attachment, and lifelong health.
Drawing on decades of experience and emerging research in infant development, attachment, neurobiology, and early-life imprinting, Linda teaches that the way we welcome our newest members of humanity matters deeply. The care provided to mothers and babies during these foundational moments can influence not only individual lives but also the health and well-being of future generations.
Through Nirvanic Birth, she seeks to educate and mentor the next generation of doulas and birthkeepers, equipping them with practical skills and a deeper understanding of the sacred responsibility they carry. She believes birth work is far more than a profession—it is a service to families, communities, and humanity itself.
Linda's hope is that those who feel called to this work will be supported, well-trained, and inspired to serve with knowledge, integrity, courage, and compassion. By protecting mothers, honoring babies, and fostering secure beginnings, birth attendants can help create a more peaceful, connected, and resilient future—one family at a time.
She has given birth to and breastfed 7 children, is a grandmother, teacher, and Certified Perinatal Doula - living both on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and Central Pennsylvania, USA
